"Heartplants" was the first longplayer of the woodwind and vibraphonist Gunter Hampel, born in 1937. The participating musicians influenced the development of German jazz for decades - and still do so today. It was the trumpeter Manfred Schoof, the pianist Alexander von Schlippenbach, the bassist Buschi Niebergall (1938 - 1990) and the drummer Pierre Courbois. With "Iron Perceptions" the record contains probably the first documented free-jazz piece of a European band. Otherwise, the music on "Heartplants" but still largely melodic, harmonious and rhythmic bound.
The Gunter Hampel Quintet of the year 1965 is considered a key group of European jazz. His album "Heartplants" was the beginning of the playful emancipation of American role models.
