Drummer Barry Altschul gets to show off his versatility and talents throughout this interesting quartet/quintet set with trombonist Glen Ferris, Sean Bergin (doubling on alto and tenor), bassist Andy McKee and (on two of the five pieces) pianist Mike Melillo. All of the quirky pieces are group originals (Altschul contributed three), with the leader's "For Papa Jo, Klook and Philly Too" being a fine tribute to three drummers. In general, the music has many free moments, yet is not afraid to swing or to include melodies. A stimulating set. - Scott Yanow
