This is one of the finest Mingus Dynasty tribute recordings. It was recorded in 1982. The Dynasty bands are "small" groups of musicians who have played with the late great Mingus while he was alive. Of course, they play only Mingus compositions. The lineup here is extraordinary: Jimmy Knepper, trombone, Richard Williams, trumpet(we get very few opportunities to hear this great trumpeter in any setting!), Ricky Ford, tenor. The rhythm section is equally fine: Roland Hanna, piano, Reggie Johnson, bass and Kenny Washington, drums. This is truly a Mingus "greatest hits" recording played by some of his greatest sidemen. And you should get this recording if only to hear the great Richard Williams.
