Released on CD by Japanese label DIW (and briefly made available in U.S. through Columbia(, this trio outing with bassist Cecil McBee and drummer Ronnie Burrage finds Cowell in typically creative form. Other than "Stella by Starlight" and the leader's "Equipoise," the repertoire (originals by each of the three musicians) is unfamiliar but Cowell's appealing postbox style makes the music both unpredictable and fairy accessible. The performances are stimulating but this Japanese import will be difficult to find. - Scott Yanow
