More rhythmic and beat-oriented than the usual Blake release, as he displays his love for gospel and spiritual rhythms, as well as the familiar Third Stream and film noir sounds. Blake has been among jazz's least acclaimed players for years, and that probably won't change, but this should refute the notion that his work is too obsessed with cerebral concerns rather than emotions. - Ron Wynn
