When we think we have reached it and grasped it, Enrico Pieranunzi moves a little beyond our reach, in a continuous evolution in which creativity generates happy musical inventions and confirms him as one of our most important artists. Enrico Pieranunzi is a storyteller and, just like the man of letters or the poet does, he has learned the difficult art of creating, from a vocabulary and grammar known to all, unprecedented syntaxes that amaze us every time. In the narration of his " Stories " we find him with the trio that had already given us the splendid " Permutation " (2012 Cam Jazz) , a trio formed by Scott Colley on double bass and Antonio Sanchez on drums.
The recording work is the result of a session in February 2011 at the Avatar Studio in New York. The signature of these pieces is that of Enrico Pieranunzi , with the exception of "The Slow Gene" by Scott Colley, to confirm and highlight one of the aspects that most distinguishes the art of the pianist, that need for invention, research, personal expression that finds a voice in the act of composition. This music contains all the peculiar traits of the three personalities that give it life, their training, their different cultures, differences that speaking the same musical language performs the miracle of eliminating on a communicative level while preserving their best qualities.
“ Stories ” conveys the natural joy of playing together, it is a collage of knowledge that creates a homogeneous yet nuanced story. The attack, with "No Improper Use", is vigorous and incisive, a sort of affirmation of the identity of the trio, an energetic breath that also distinguishes "Detrás Más Allá" and "Blue Waltz" in which we seem to perceive echoes of Nino Rota-like atmospheres of Fellini's best passages. Imagination and creativity are fully expressed in the almost abstract improvisation of "Wich Way Is Up". The other soul by Enrico Pieranunzi, that of the passionate creator of stories, of evocator of poetic atmospheres, the one that makes us close our eyes and listen to ourselves through music, emerges at the center of the disc, in "Where Stories Are", a delicate and almost evanescent ballad in its grace in which the melodic phrasing of Pieranunzi 's piano is perfectly supported by a rhythmic section that even becomes lyrical for the occasion. Closes " Stories " a piece in which Pieranunzi seems to draw liberally from his classical training. "The Real You" is full of suggestions, it evokes romanticism at times and impressionism at times, a very sweet song that oscillates between essentiality and momentum, the wise closure of an extraordinary story.
This work was released in conjunction with Enrico Pieranunzi being awarded the «Best International Piano Player» at the 2014 edition of the «Echo Jazz Awards», an important award organized by the German recording industry. - Paola Parri / piano solo.it
