Two CDs that give an overview of Jenkins' earlier tune-oriented and later free playing. Muhal Richard Abrams is a composer who has served as an important musical, spiritual and social influence as president of the AACM (Association for the Advancement of Creative Musicians) founded in Chicago in 1965, by members of his earlier group the Experimental Band. His own work may be heard on Blu Nlu Blu (Black Saint 1991) and Family Talk (Black Saint 1993) in excellent performances that reach out to the listener. Abrams' recent and daring work, the masterpiece "Duet for Pianos #1" has yet to be recorded. - Gene Tyranny
