This 1971 studio date features Tete Montoliu alone at the piano; the pianist is in great form throughout the date. The most familiar songs include an intricate hard bop rendition of "Here's That Rainy Day," a formidable interpretation of John Lewis'"Django," and a poignant arrangement of the often overly sentimental "Autumn in New York." There are four Montoliu originals: the up-tempo, somewhat daredevil "Gentofte 4349," the mesmerizing but difficult to follow "Apartment 512," the lovely "Ballad for Line," and the playful "Little Camila." This is a rewarding CD which will very likely be difficult to locate. - Ken Dryden
